From The Canvas
I always wanted to be a writer. Always. It's too bad the lack of formal education intimidated me.
No, it's not that much of a requirement, as I've seen loads of people with college educations unable to form a sentence, much less think.
So, this is my chance. Granted, I've been writing crazy-assed comments and assessments of the human condition for years on the internets, but they're usually reactionary in nature. Somebody posting something idiotic on FaceBook, for example, that cannot be allowed to stand without commentary or ridicule. Mostly ridicule.
What's this "From the Canvas" moniker ? It's a boxing term. When you get knocked on your ass in a boxing ring, you end up on the canvas. From there you can either drag yourself up immediately, or if you're a thinking man, stay there until the referee gets to the count of 8 and then get up. If you're REALLY smart, you just lay there because you know you didn't belong in the ring in the first place.
I'm just laying there. But that doesn't mean quietly.

Richard Burton got famous as an actor. Of course, he got more famous as the Dick in Liz 'n' Dick. And for being Welsh and having a cool voice. But as an old-fashioned Welsh man, he thought being an actor was a nancy-boy job. He wrote this in his autobiography. Then he weaved a tapestry of stories of his legendary love and drunken celebrity, evoking images of his countryman Dylan Thomas. Burton confessed that he really wanted to be a writer. Always. But he lacked the formal education. Nevertheless, he was--above all else--a writer.
